The Mashpee Wampanoag have maintained a continuous presence within Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for at least 12,000 years. In the 1970s, the Mashpee built ‘12 Acres Village’—a sacred site by Attaquin Beach shared among family and friends. On July 29th, 1976, police violently dismantled the site. Through a course in the Harvard Kennedy School, my team and I sought to assist the Mashpee in regaining sovereignty over this sacred piece of land. Materials related to this project are not yet available for public dissemination.
